Control Ableton device with odd/negative parameter range

Hi all, complete newb here, I want to target an Ableton device with a generic midi controller that outputs a typical 0-127 cc message. But the device value range is -2 to 3. A simple mapping does not seem to work and in Ableton I get the message “waiting for pick-up”. I watched the tutorial that tackles the % range of the device parameters. But I’m still very confused. Can somebody guide into the right direction? Thanks
