Loving CSS! Questions and Comments…

Greetings! I just purchased a Midi Fighter Twister and the Control Surface Studio lifetime license. Using it with Ableton. I started out with the standard Midi Fighter Utility, but of course it was way too limiting. I’m loving CSS! However, I’ve got a series of comments/questions if you don’t mind:

HAD TO DO A FACTORY RESET
At first I couldn’t get anything to work with CSS and the Twister. I finally figured that since I’d already been doing mappings with the Midi Fighter Utility, I’d better do a Factory Reset. That solved all the issues straight away. I didn’t see anything in the documentation for CSS on this step, so thought I’d mention it just in case you wanted to include the suggestion.

BANK SWITCHING / SIDE BUTTONS
Using a control script from CSS changes the Twister side button default functionality. It seems now that with CSS, changing twister Banks occurs with the Left 2 and Right 2 buttons only (left button to go down, right button to go up). All the other buttons don’t seem to do anything – unless you specifically assign a function in your script. I couldn’t find anything in the documentation on this, so thought I’d mention it.

Having said that, is there a way to actually assign bank changes to side buttons in your own script? Button L1 for bank 1, L2 for bank 2, L3 for bank 3, R1 for bank 4? Something like that?

SET LED BAR COLORS BELOW ENCODERS
I’m completely mystified as to the default color assignments for the LED bars below the encoders! What’s the logic there? Is there some kind of default LED color guide based on functions/parameters/etc? Is there a way to set your own colors? For instance, I set up a parameter bank for a selected device and the default color is yellow for the LED bar. Can I change that to another color?

USE BUTTON PUSH TO SET A SPECIFIC PARAMETER IN A MACRO
In the Midi Fighter Utility Software you can set a push button action to make a parameter in Ableton go to it’s default (such as 0 for a rack macro). How can I do the same with CSS? Is it possible to have that button assignment on a Macro go to a specific parameter – such as ’45’ ?

Hope that all makes sense!

Hi,

With regards to needing a factory reset to get your Twister working, I assume you mean with using the provided Twister controller? We can add a note with this as you’re right it doesn’t mention requiring the factory settings.

BANK SWITCHING / SIDE BUTTONS
With regards to the twister’s own bank changing, this is outside of Ableton so CSS scripts cannot change this.
CSS does have its own version of banks called Modes. You can switch between these using any buttons or encoders.
See this video on using modes: https://youtu.be/_gtgD9eExTo

SET LED BAR COLORS BELOW ENCODERS
Yes you can set your own custom colours based on your own functionality.
See this video on setting up LED feedback https://youtu.be/ssT2qUHsFa4

USE BUTTON PUSH TO SET A SPECIFIC PARAMETER IN A MACRO
You can do this in a couple of ways
1 for a device parameter mapping, you can use the the minimum/maximum settings to set the position that the param will move to when you press and release your button.
2 You could also do this with a Reaction mapping.
See this post where I’m explaining how to do this for a Send. https://remotify.io/community/question/css-ableton-live-sends-help#comme…
For a Device Parameter mapping, this would be very similar. You just need to change the ‘reactions’ section to select a device param rather than a send, like so:
[tracks]     [0].devices[1].parameters[1].value
For more details on Reactions for Device Parameters, see ‘Setting the Device Number / Device Parameter Number’ in the Reactions Reference page: https://remotify.io/tutorials/reactions-reference-guide

Hey Guys,

Just a small heads up! Midifighter Twister is capable of switching banks if it receive certain midi Notes Or CC’s on a system channel (Ch.4 by Default)

Bank 1 = CC.000
Bank 2 = CC.001
Bank 3 = CC.002
Bank 4 = CC.003

I hope this helps.
Happy mapping!
