Overview
Learn how to generate scripts created with Control Surface Studio (CSS) into Ableton Live. This guide walks you through the steps of installing and configuring a new MIDI remote script built using Control Surface Studio into Ableton Live.
Step 1: Set Up App Settings in CSS
Before generating your script, CSS needs to know some key pieces of information such as the location of Ableton Live on your computer. These settings are configured in the CSS Settings menu.
For details on configuring it correctly, read the following article: Control Surface Studio Settings menu.
Step 2: Generate the Script into Ableton Live
Assuming you have already created a script, attached a Controller Template / inputs and added some mappings. You can then generate the script into Ableton Live, by clicking the orange “Generate into Ableton Live” button in the Script Panel.
Step 3: Enable the Script in Ableton Live
If this is a new Script, close and re-open Ableton Live. Then…
Depending on your version of Live:
- In Live 12+, go to Settings → MIDI tab.
- In Live 11 or below, go to Preferences → MIDI tab.
Configure the Ableton Live settings as detailed in this article.
Step 4: Confirm the Script Loaded Successfully
- When you select a CSS script in Control Surface menu, a yellow status message appears at the bottom of Ableton Live.
- This indicates the script loaded without errors.
- You can verify this by:
- Selecting another control surface script.
- Reselecting your CSS script to see the status message reappear.
